Rolltec®
Rolling Systems Ltd. Wins the 2009 IFAI “Outstanding Achievement
Award”
The 2009 IFAI awards were handed out
in San Diego, CA and amongst the 416 entries from 17 countries,
Rolltec's® project “Awnings for a Restaurant Rooftop Patio” was
selected to receive the “Outstanding Achievement Award”. A committee
of editors, educators, architects, designers and industry experts
judged the entries based on complexity, design, workmanship,
uniqueness and functionality.
Outstanding Achievement Award: Retractable
Awnings for a Restaurant Rooftop
Patio
Our project displayed 2 Adalia
Extreme X3M™ motorized retractable awnings on the rooftop patio of a
prestigious restaurant in Maple, Ontario. Not only was the installation difficult in itself
being that there was no initial structure or area to install the
awnings which therefore required a specially engineered support system to be
fabricated and installed; the manufacturing of these awnings also proved to be challenging. To compliment the interior of the restaurant, the
fabric selected for these two awnings was blue and white stripes. Concerned with the “dizzying
look” of a traditional block pattern over a large area, we spliced each panel of
blue and white fabric in order to accommodate the striped look the customer was trying to achieve. Beyond the initial objective
to create to a broader seating area, these awnings contributed
tremendously towards lowering the air conditioning cost due to their
proximity to the restaurant's windows.
Rolltec® Rolling Systems Ltd. Awarded In Two Categories at the 2008 IFAI Expo
At the 2008 IFAI Expo, in Charlotte, NC, Rolltec® Rolling Systems Ltd. was awarded with an Outstanding Achievement Award and an Award of Excellence for the projects Retractable Awning over a Swimming Pool and Retractable Awnings over a Terrace. The complexity, uniqueness and sheer elegance of these projects set Rolltec® apart from the competition.
Rolltec® competed amongst the finest manufacturers in the world. From the sixteen countries that entered, two of Rolltec's® five submissions were selected as the winners of their respective categories. This is the 8th IFAI award that Rolltec® has won.
Award of Excellence: Retractable Awning over a Swimming Pool
The use of the Atrium™ awning over the swimming pool is very practical. It provides shade and privacy in this closely knit Brampton neighbourhood.
What makes this project unique is the sheer mass of the awning. With a dimension of 19'x20' and tight space restrictions, our installers utilized all their skills to provide a secure and precise installation.
The home owner gained privacy, UV protection and a little bit of the ocean life in the heart of the suburbs.
Outstanding Achievement Award: Retractable Awnings over a Terrace
An uneven stone surface and large sections of the home recessed made this installation particularly difficult. Initially, we had to chisel the rough stone creating a perfectly flat surface to which the wall brackets were secured. To accommodate the recessed wall, we engineered special extended brackets to give the illusion of one continuous awning.
The homeowner gained additional UV protection on their patio, while shading their windows, thereby reducing heat gain from the sun and minimizing their carbon footprint. Also, these awnings made a lovely enhancement to the home, blending in perfectly with the brick and moulding.

Award for Excellence for the project Awnings Over Terrace
This project consisted of three Adalia X3M™ awnings complete with Somfy automated controls, installed on a house in an upscale community in Toronto. The awnings were designed to provide the homeowner with shade over the terrace as well as the indoor living space. By installing retractable awnings, the homeowner was able to control the environmental temperature inside, and significantly reduce the air-conditioning costs during summer months.
The difficulty of this project was in the installation process due to the awnings' placement on an uneven stone surface. The stone surface was skillfully chiseled to accommodate the size of wall brackets, which were installed using epoxy glue shields and threaded rods.
Outstanding Achievement Award for the project Retractable Awning for Restaurant Terrace
The restaurant owner contacted Rolltec® to increase the seating area of the patio for patrons' use without having to worry about the weather conditions. The umbrellas previously used did not provide patrons with sufficient shade or protection from rain. The owner decided to replace all of the umbrellas with a single retractable awning.
At the completion of his project, the owner was thrilled with the results. On top of achieving the original objectives of creating additional seating without having to factor in the weather conditions, the awning also significantly reduces air-conditioning costs on hot summer days. The terrace became the most favored place for the restaurant's patrons. The difficulty of this project was in the installation of the huge 32' wide awning on decorative, wooden planks. Special anchors with spacers hidden behind wall brackets needed to be fabricated.
Outstanding Achievement Award for the project Retractable Awning for Restaurant Patio in Downtown Toronto
A beautiful retractable awning in conjunction with the bright wall colors, restaurant sign and window frames makes this restaurant stand out on this dull looking street and drastically increases business. The restaurant owner is able to use this patio as a smoking area. The additional outdoor seating space allowed the restaurant to accommodate more people in busy weekend hours and during outdoor festivals and events.
The complexity of this project was in the installation. When we were originally approached by the customer, there was no solid installation surface. We had only two uneven columns to work with. Our installers built out the wall with custom made spacers and reinforced it wood boards, and covered it with aluminum cladding to compliment the existing exterior.
Rolltec® Wins The International Outstanding Achievement Award at the 2004 IFAI Expo
The 57th annual IFAI competition garnered 370 entries from companies in 21 countries. This was the second highest number of participants in the program's history. Rolltec® walked away with the Outstanding Achievement Award for a project in downtown Toronto.
The owner of a restaurant in downtown Toronto wanted to be able to use the patio without worrying about weather conditions, and also to use it as a smoking area. They were very specific about what they wanted: a fabric that enhanced the Spanish-themed style of the restaurant and the multicoloured graphic logos to be reproduced exactly as the originals.
The patio was large and configured so that it required two awnings. These were manufactured using three lateral arms and fabric supports. Complexity was in installation as well as in reproducing the artwork. Limited space between the sign and the top of the door required the use of the most compact awning system. Special cedar adapters were made to match existing window and door frames. The restaurant now stands out on its crowded street, attracting more customers with its European flair.
Rolltec® Wins the International Outstanding Achievement Award at the 2002 IFAI Expo

Rolltec® manufactured a retractable awning over the 2M Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson, Arizona. The awning extends from the floor to cover the telescope automatically by remote control. Prior to the installation, employees had to cover the telescope by hand.

Rolltec® Rolling Systems Ltd. was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award in the International Achievement Awards competition at IFAI Expo 1999, held in San Diego, California. The event was organized and sponsored by the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI).
Rolltec® won the award in the Retractable Awnings category. The project consisted of a series of five Paramount™ retractable awnings designed for a residential mansion near Toronto, Canada. Each awning's operation is completely automated, including sun and wind sensors as well as group controls.
